Eugene Jacques Bullard, the first African-American combat pilot, was one of 200 Americans who flew for France in World War I. Nicknamed ‘the black swallow of death’ he survived the war and died in 1961 aged 66.

Cedar Hill Cemetery, Vicksburg, Mississippi.   Douglas The Camel, or “Old Douglas,” was a domesticated camel used by Company A of the Forty-third Mississippi Infantry, part of the Confederate Army during the American Civil War.  He was killed by Union snipers at the Siege of Vicksburg in 1863.
